October 2004: in this issue...
Guru's Gadgets The Monster Smash
Securely Trash Your Media
The first and most common tip from any security and privacy consultant is "Get a good cross-cut shredder."
So, now you shred receipts, financial papers, credit card offers, mail, and more. Of course, as a member of the informed digerati, you also keep data, music, and backups on CDs and DVDs. You have credit cards, membership cards, and maybe even the occasional floppy disk with private data. You need a way to be sure that all of that media and more is thoroughly destroyed when you are done with it.
The Royal Paper Shredder and Media Destroyer, Model MD100, shreds Compact Discs, 3.5" floppy disks, credit cards, photos, or up to seven folded sheets of paper into pieces 3/16" x 1.5". It is small, surprisingly quiet, and monstrously strong. This is a small desktop-sized unit that can go a long way toward making sure that you are the only person using your money and your identity. Website Review Listen Up with Audible.com
While heading cross-country on a road trip, sitting bumper-to-bumper in the morning commute, or running nowhere at all on a treadmill, people are listening to audiobooks to pass the time. If you're an audiobook listener, a good place to find the titles you want is on the Internet at www.Audible.com.

The selection of more than 18,000 audiobooks, magazines, newspapers and radio is hard to beat. Audible.com features exclusive downloads like The New York Times Audio Digest, the audio edition of Forbes Magazine, public radio programs like Car Talk. The 26-category drop-down menu enables you to browse easily, but if you know what title you’re looking for, an advanced search will take you right to it. (Click here for a quick look at Audible.com)
Audible.com files are available for anyone to purchase, but the subscription service, AudibleListener®, is not a bad option. There are two levels of membership BasicListener and PremiumListener. BasicListener ($14.95/mo) gives you the choice of one audiobook plus one audio magazine, newspaper, or radio program each month, while PremiumListener ($21.95/mo) gives you two audiobooks each month. On top of the free downloads, a subscriber will get a discount for other purchases at Audible.com. Not a bad deal for the avid audiobook listener.
Audible.com files can be used on an AudibleReady MP3 player, Apple iPod, Palm Handheld, Pocket PC, computer desktop or on CDs you burn yourself. Once you’ve purchased the file you want, download it to your computer and listen away. Right now Audible.com is running a special offer for new subscribers. If you join AudibleListener® for 12 months, you’ll save a $100 off a handheld, including the Apple iPod. Visit the www.Audible.com for details.

Gmail is the new web-based email service from Google and it has some impressive features. Gmail offers a massive 1,000MB (1GB) of storage. That's enough to keep every message you receive for years to come! Gmail uses Google's famous, lightning-fast search engine to find and sort your email instantly and all of your messages are sorted by topic thread, allowing you to keep every email conversation organized and accessible.
|
Even better, Gmail with all its features is absolutely free. How is that possible? Gmail uses the same instant-search capability of Google to display tiny text-based advertisements to the side of your email window.
If you have used Google, you are familiar with these ads. They are small, unobtrusive, and often quite useful! Using a keyword-based relevance algorithm, the ads that are displayed are chosen to be relevant to the topic that you are viewing. In other words, read a message from a friend about the latest album from your favorite band and you may see ads for upcoming concerts. Read more for a special offer.
Good news for .Mac subscribers - you are getting more. An added 150MB for emails or files gives the user a whopping 250MB of storage space.
Posted on www.mac.com (October, 2004) The combined storage for your .Mac Mail and iDisk has been increased to 250 MB. That means you now have additional room for your email messages and mail attachments, web pages, and backups.
More storage can be added for an additional charge.
